The University of Iowa
Chemistry Building Addition and Renovation - Iowa City, Iowa
The design involved removal of a major auditorium and several small rooms at the center of the complex and replacing them with a new multi-story addition containing teaching laboratories and all new mechanical and electrical infrastructure for the building (48,750 SF). Renovated space totals 102,000 SF. Laboratories feature cutting edge high performance fume hoods to optimize safety and life cycle costs. New classrooms, offices, lab and building support spaces are all designed to serve the growing Chemistry Department.
The project has proceeded under five construction phases in part to allow Owner occupancy throughout construction. The University has obtained additional funding for the design team to design fit out of shelled-in space and additional renovations for new research laboratories.
